Griffining Continued into 2013: A Virginia School’s Photo Campaign

Griffining began as a September 2012 football celebration, but the seated, arms-raised pose stayed recognizable beyond its first week. A February 2013 high-school campaign in Virginia shows how the meme had moved into schools and everyday community life.

A graduation invitation made of photographs

On February 14, 2013, The Washington Post reported that students at Broad Run High School in Ashburn had organized a Twitter campaign to invite Robert Griffin III to speak at their graduation. The campaign used Griffining photographs showing students, teachers and cafeteria workers around campus. The aim was to catch the attention of a prominent athlete who practiced nearby.

A February 15, 2013 Ashburn Patch article also described the effort, including the student campaign and their connection to Griffin through his appearance at a football game the previous fall.

What this example tells us

The Broad Run campaign was different from the first wave of 2012 fan photos. It used an already familiar meme as a collective message to a specific person. It also showed how the gesture could be reinterpreted for school spirit and an invitation rather than just a football victory celebration.

Because the photographs include students, our archival policy is to document the contemporary coverage without copying those images into the revived gallery unless their provenance, rights, and privacy are sufficiently established.

The boundary between original and later Griffining

This is a 2013 continuation, not a recovered original Griffining.com 2012 submission. The source belongs in the historical timeline and document directory, while the restored original photo gallery is reserved for verified historical submissions. The distinction keeps a modern reconstruction from rewriting the original site.
