How the Griffining Archive Is Being Recovered

The original Griffining.com was hosted on an older WordPress installation. A new installation has been established for the 2026 restoration, but recreating the design is only part of the project. Preserving the original image submissions requires careful source matching.

A continuously updated historical source directory separates original-site material from independently published photographs and newspaper coverage.

Restoration progress (October 29, 2026): The public gallery currently contains 40 restored photograph entries credited to 38 distinct posting handles. Of these, 29 have documented original 2012–2013 publication dates. Separately, our partial September 2013 archived-homepage recording identifies 63 historical entries, and 36 particular photo or media entries from that recording remain unmatched. Some recovered photos are outside the visible recording, and some handles appear on multiple images, so these numbers represent different overlapping inventories—not a simple subtraction or a claim that the entire original site is recovered.

Recovery sequence

  • Identify archived URLs and capture dates from the Wayback Machine.
  • Extract original post titles, historic dates, captions, category assignments, and image filenames.
  • Seek original full-resolution uploads or archived image variants, and record source URLs.
  • Exclude duplicate and unrelated photos; distinguish originals from editorial images.
  • Republish only after an attribution and rights review.

What happens when an image is missing?

We keep the historical record as accurately as we can, but we won’t replace a missing original submission with an unrelated photo. Missing images will be indicated until an original file is recovered.

What the photo credits mean

Verified original-site record: A photo, contributor, historical caption and date can be connected to the original Griffining.com using an archived page or the owner’s recording of it. Verified fields are shown as recovered; missing fields stay blank. A historical photo date is distinct from the 2026 restoration publication date.

Filename-based restoration: An original JPG uploaded by the site owner has a Twitter handle in its filename, but that alone does not establish its 2012–2013 publication date, caption or original category. Sometimes the filename names someone mentioned in a caption rather than the account that made the post, so these records remain provisional until the historical source can be checked.

Press-only evidence: News outlets reported and reproduced Griffining photographs; those images are evidence of the broader trend but are not automatically verified as Griffining.com submissions, nor does inclusion in a news article establish permission to republish.

See the verified historical photo timeline, the contributor directory, the missing-photo checklist, and the primary-source directory. Historical images showing minors and uncertain rights receive additional review before new publication.

The current source snapshot

December 27, 2012: archived Griffining.com homepage.

Our owner-provided screen recording of the September 11, 2013 archived homepage shows the Wayback Machine timeline beginning on September 14, 2012. That earlier capture is a priority for future review because the present restored photo sequence is concentrated in November 2012 through May 2013. The capture date alone does not guarantee that every original photograph survives.
